He retired from the Virginia Beach, VA Fire Department as a Captain and supervised firefighters responding to emergency incidents involving fires, emergency medical incidents, and hazardous materials incidents. He also coordinated reviews of fire protection systems, fire code inspections and fire investigations for the city. He instructed new recruits and fellow firefighters in all aspects of firefighting techniques and fire investigations. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration from Hampton University, Associates Degrees in Administration of Justice and Fire Science from Tidewater Community College. His final assignment was the Captain of the Fire Investigation unit where he investigated many fires which involving single and multi-family dwellings, commercial structures, vehicles, arson investigations and fire fatalities
