Matthew Sonnenberg, National Program Manager of EFI Global’s Spill Response and Environmental Claims Management program, recently spoke on emerging areas in PFAS, bringing attention to a growing challenge that many organizations may not yet fully recognize – airborne exposure to volatile PFAS compounds. As the science continues to evolve, these insights are helping businesses, property owners, and risk managers better understand where hidden risks may exist and, more importantly, how to address them.
Traditionally, PFAS concerns have centered around water and soil contamination. However, volatile compounds behave differently, with exposure often occurring through the air, often from everyday materials and indoor dust. This shift expands the conversation beyond environmental compliance to include indoor air quality, workplace safety, and building operations – areas where proactive assessment can make a meaningful difference.
While research is still developing, what’s clear is that waiting for definitive regulatory guidance is not a strategy. Instead, organizations are taking a more proactive approach by evaluating site history, identifying potential PFAS-containing materials, and implementing monitoring programs to better understand their risk exposure. Practical mitigation strategies and occupational health and safety programs can significantly reduce potential exposure and create healthier spaces for employees and occupants.
The takeaway is straightforward: PFAS risk is evolving, but it is manageable with the right expertise and approach. Whether addressing legacy environmental concerns, evaluating indoor air quality, or responding to a potential spill or contamination event, having a clear plan grounded in data and experience is key.
